Development
On February 19, 2025, the future of Heartstopper at Netflix was uncertain, as Alice Oseman shared an update on the status of season 4. Nick and Charlie’s love story is based on a graphic novel series of five volumes, with Oseman writing a final volume to conclude the series. The third season of the Netflix series took elements from the third volume, but the streamer has not officially commissioned a fourth season yet, something Oseman was working on. In September 2024, Oseman said she was working on a sixth and final book for Heartstopper and wanted to release it before a potential fourth season aired.[3] In March 2025, Heartstopper EP Patrick Walters spotlighted the difficulty of getting YA projects made as he says the creative team is "working hard" on landing a fourth season of the Netflix smash. Fans are desperate for a fourth season of Heartstopper but Netflix is yet to officially announce. At the same time, Amazon YA smashes like Maxton Hall and Culpa Tuya are breaking records. Walters said "there are lots of moving parts" on a potential season 4 and "we are working hard on it," but added that he doesn't have a formal update. Walters said he has witnessed worsening funding challenges over "seasons and seasons with Heartstopper," along with the "production complexities of making and commissioning TV in this moment." He said "The challenge is what you need to do in this moment is to pitch something that feels specific and there is not precedent for it and it is moving the conversation on," he added. "But that is a risk. Often I find you want to gravitate towards risky material and it needs that passion – but that’s a challenge."[4] On April 19, 2025, Kit Connor said he'd "definitely like to do" a potential fourth season as he gave an update on the Netflix series adaptation of Alice Oseman's YA graphic novels. "I'd definitely like to do it as long as it's done right," Connor told Vogue. "I just want to make sure that we keep the heart in it. So, we are working on something and hopefully we're making it happen. But we'll see. No promises. I don't want to do it if it’s not right." In October 2024, Oseman stated "I would like there to be [another season]. We've got no kind of confirmation yet. I would love to adapt volume six. I think one more season or one more, whatever it could be, would finish the story, conclude everyone’s character arcs, and help us to say goodbye to all of those characters. So yeah, keeping my fingers crossed."[5] On April 22, 2025, on the third anniversary of the television series, Netflix greenlit a Heartstopper movie, starring and executive produced by the series’ leads Joe Locke and Connor to be directed by Wash Westmoreland, which will serve as a series finale. Westmoreland, who has an extensive feature background, succeeds Euros Lyn, who directed the first two seasons of Heartstopper, and Andy Newbery, who helmed season 3. Locke and Connor join the executive producer ranks of the movie alongside Oseman, Lyn, Walters, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman who all served as executive producers on the first three seasons. See-Saw Films is back as production company.[1]
Casting
In April 2025, Kit Connor and Joe Locke joined the film's cast as co-leads, reprising their roles from the television series.[1]
